There has been a number of Ergonomic keyboards released on the market over the past 20 or so years, as well as a handful of keyboard layouts. It is quite apparent however that none of these have excelled in the market. The main reason for this is human nature. The majority of people when confronted with the possibility of future problems or injuries, will not take action until the problem occurs. There are a number of methods currently employed in ergonomic keyboard design to tackle RSIs. These include;

Separation keyboards are fully spilt down the center, tethered by a wire allowing for more adjustability, unlike splay keyboards. The reasoning for this is to allow the user to have his arms and hands in the most natural position while typing, which is directly infront of the shoulders. This design has come under much criticism however as it is believed to shift the problem to mouse usage as it pushes the mouse further away from the user, requiring the user to reach further to use the mouse.
Tented Keyboards

Tented keyboards, which are probably the most popular ergonomic keyboards on the market, incorporate a slight hump or rise in the centre of the keyboard. This rise is usually between 10 and 20 degrees and is often adjustable to suit individual users, typically most users don’t need more than a few degrees inclination. The reasoning behind this method is to accomadate the forearms most comfortable position when typing, which is slightly tilted inwards. This relaxes the muscles in the forearm and reduces compression on the nerves. It does however reduce the amount of force available to press the keys which also decreases exponentially with the increase in angle of the keyboards tent.
